Happy Friday kittens! I'm so delighted to show you all our little herb garden tower DIY. I've had this metal tower thingy that I purchased years ago from Hobby Lobby (to use at craft fairs) but it never really worked out... so Le Husband and I decided to put it to good use and what better way to use it other than a sweet little planter for our herb garden!
I'm pretty much obsessed with fresh herbs and it's a must for me to have all my favorite ones in our garden every Summer, but sometimes they take up so much room that we don't have enough space left over for our other favorite stuff like tomato's, onions, cucumbers etc.... so this year we have decided to move our garden from it's previous location and transfer to dirt to create a higher more efficient raised garden bed. It's currently in the works as we speak... more on that later. So... with that being said, we thought it would be more convenient for both of us to use the metal tower and put our herbs in the screened in porch so it's easier to water and to just walk out there and snip some herbs and take them back into the kitchen. Makes sense right? Pictured above are all the Mister and my most favorite herbs to use. Mint, Thyme, Parsley (flat leafed), Cilantro and of course Basil.
As always... Sophie had to be a part of whatever we are doing outside. Lucy (our older dog) tends to stay indoors nowadays. She is getting to old and cranky to partake in the fun.
So here was our thoughts on the placement of the herbs. Mint would go on the bottom because it's a pretty aggressive grower and we didn't want it to get mixed in with our other favorite herbs and take over. The Basil will become pretty big and tall so that will go closer to the bottom as well. The smaller and more delicate herbs such as the thyme and cilantro are closer to the top.
The Mister bought these awesome coconut basket thingys at The Home Depot so it would hold in the dirt and moisture and they look pretty swell as well. They only came in one size so he had to trim the edges to make them fit.
We like to use Miracle-Gro Garden soil. Also purchased at The Home Depot.
We had a left over roll of landscaping fiber that acts as a weed barrier for the garden. So we cut some down to size and popped it in before placing the dirt on top. It will help to hold the dirt in place as well as moisture and will also to keep things tidy by not having our dirt spill all over our nice screened in porch.
So the herbs come in these environmentally friendly pots that can be planted directly into the soil (after removing the plastic wrapping). But we like to remove the whole pot anyhow... it's really whatever you as a gardener choose to do.
The Mister put the basil in first and then added the Miracle-Gro around them with a light layer on top.
Voila!
Repeat for all you favorite little herbs....
In the end you can't even see the fiber at the bottom of the coconut basket.
Sophie approves.
You can get all your supplies at The Home Depot. They have the best gardening section and we have one that is in our neighborhood that we love.
Sophie demands kisses.
This is how it turned out. We are both pretty pleased with the results. The tower functions well as a planter and can be moved really easily. The baskets also can be removed as well making it easy to water and trim if needed. Usually the herbs require moderate sun so it's a perfect location being in the screened in porch. We also have these awesome shades (which we also purchased at The Home Depot) that can be rolled up or down.
Slowly, our screened in porch is turning into a little oasis. We simply love plants and can't wait for this Summer when all our banana plants are big and lush. We also have some palms that make our porch seem more welcoming. I'll be posting more about our garden and what we've got growing in there this year... so that will be exciting.
I'd love to hear your comment or questions of all sorts. My Husbear is the green thumb of the family but I am learning more and more from my little farm boy every year. Hope you all have awesome plans for this weekend. We are tackling our new and improved garden as well as re-painting our house. Whew!
xoxo
